Strategy games in virtual reality are always worth giving a try. Although the results are often hit-and-miss, Comis Trip certainly struck a chord with us. This game is currently available on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift for the price of $14.99. It offers a 60s themed RTS experience which is accessible to strategy veterans and novice players alike. For an indie game title, the end result is certainly a spectacle to behold.
Cosmic Trip is a Welcome and Pleasant Surprise
One thing about Cosmic Trip that is worth mentioning outside of the gameplay itself is how the game was in Early Access since 2016. For a VR title by a developer making their debut, the game certainly looked appealing from day one. After some tweaks, added content, and overall improvements, the game was “officially” released in June of 2017. While this may not be your average real-time strategy game involving battlefields, troops, and fortifications, none of this makes Comic Trip less appealing. In fact, it provides a welcome change of pace from the “mundane” RTS concept we have grown accustomed to over the years.
The first-person view of Cosmic Trip is not something most of us would have expected. At the same time, it makes the game even more intense than ever before. The game still revolves around building items, robots, and guns, as one would expect from an RTS game. Robots will collect the necessary resources so you can keep progressing in the game and obliterate your enemies. Somehow, the developers managed to optimize this experience for virtual reality without making any noteworthy sacrifices.A job well done by Funktronic Labs.
Dominating your enemies will not be easy as it sounds, mind you. You need an army of different robots to do so. While there are just four types, they can all be upgraded for improved efficiency. You will need these enhanced versions soon, as the local population of this alien planet isn’t too happy about you sticking your nose in their business. Surprisingly, the game is quite deep, but also approachable for people who want to play a quick round and move on with their daily life. A very impressive game by an indie developer, to say the least.
Additionally, the game design, audio, and overall background story are all done quite well. There is a slight lack of customization when it comes to using different weapons and robots, but the provided options are more than sufficient to have a good time. Cosmic Trip is a rare gem in the world of mediocre virtual reality games available today. Well worth picking up if you are into RTS games and want to have a good time.
