It is somewhat surprising to note there is a big lack of proper RPGs in the VR gaming industry. When we got our hands on Karnage Chronicles, the expectations were quite high. A dungeon crawler in virtual reality is either a big hit or a big disappointment. In the case of this game, it is a successful attempt at creating an engaging RPG. In fact, it may be our favorite dungeon crawler to date. The game is available for the Oculus Rift, with a PlayStation VR and HTC Vive release to follow soon.
Karnage Chronicles is a Positive Surprise
Although the Karnage Chronicles game has been in early access since earlier this year, we purposefully left it aside until the developers made some big changes. Not because the game was terrible at first, but mainly because we wanted to give this game a fair review based on the finished product. The long wait has paid off, as the game is now available for Oculus Rift. It looks a lot better, there is more to do, and there is no reason not to pick it up if you are a fan of RPG games in general.
The first thing you need to do in Karnage Chronicles is picking one of two classes. You are either a warrior or an archer, each of which has a unique playstyle. Regardless of the class you pick, you will come across different weapons during the playthrough. Plus, you will not go alone in this game, as there is a construct-for-hire which will help you progress through the game. It is an interesting approach and one that simply works as advertised.
Along the way, there is plenty of equipment, gear, and gold to collect. Karnage Chronicles checks all of the right boxes in this regard. Moreover, every dungeon looks and feels very different from the rest, with breakable objects along the way. You also get to complete various quests, solve some basic puzzles, and there is an item merchant to check out as well. Navigating through in-game menus is done conveniently as well, even though it may take a few tries to get used to it. There is still some work to be done when it comes to using consumables, though.
Although the game only has a few dungeons right now, they provide a solid few hours of content. The developers are still in the process of adding more content on a regular basis. So far, the game looks great, plays extremely well, and has enough content to get you started. We can only hope Nordic Trolls keeps up this pace, as there is always a demand for more things to do. We are well impressed with Karnage Chronicles so far, and can’t wait to see what is next.
