Bringing soccer – or football, if you live in the US – to virtual reality is something a lot of people are looking forward to. Being able to play a soccer game in VR is possible already, but a FIFA-style game in VR does not exist as of right now. VRFC aims to change all of that, as the game is available for PS VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift for the price of $14.99.
VRFC Checks a few of the Right Boxes
It is evident playing football in virtual reality will not become a mainstream trend anytime soon. It simply doesn’t make sense on paper and even less sense in the real world. More specifically, running around while wearing a VR headset is asking for trouble, especially when doing so in a room with other people. VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club is trying a slightly different attempt. It is not a stationary game by any means, even though it is not exactly the real thing either.
To be more specific, VRFC allows players to pass, shoot, kick, dribble, tackle, and head balls as one would expect. All of these experiences are represented quite well and feel as difficult as one would expect. Thankfully, there is a tutorial for players to check out, as it lets you get acquainted with the controls a bit better. Do keep in mind VRFC has an incredibly steep learning curve, but we consider it to be a good thing.
The game is certainly sociable in many different ways. Football is all about playing together with others against a team of other like-minded people. Bringing this to VR is a challenge, yet VRFC seems to represent is quite well. Unfortunately, this also means there is no single player game mode throughout the game right now, albeit that may be added later on. Without proper teamwork, you won’t win too many games, though, but no one expected anything different at this point.
With the game supporting up to eight players at once and cross-play across all platforms available, VRFC will certainly find a welcome audience. The game looks and feels quite genuine, even though there is still room for improvements in this regard. VRFC is one of the best sports experiences to date, and it makes us excited about the future of sports games in VR. Definitely worth picking up, especially given the relatively cheap price.
