While we are big Planet of the Apes fans, that doesn’t necessarily translate to a proper VR game by definition. In the case of Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR, it is quite evident the game is incredibly linear, but it still ties in well with the movie franchise. The game is not perfect by any means, though, but owners of the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR will have a good time with it regardless.

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes is Solid in Some Ways

Whenever a new VR game comes around which is based on a movie or TV show, the expectations are not that high. Even though the Planet of the Apes franchise is a massive hit for several decades now, most of the games associated with it are borderline terrible, This VR adaptation, in particular, seems to be slightly above average, but only marginally.

What makes Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR so interesting is how you effectively get to play as an ape in the first half of the game. Running, jumping, climbing, and so forth are all things you will need to get used to. Climbing is by far the most fun and easiest to get the hang of. Running and jumping is a bit hit-and-miss in terms of controls, but it gets better eventually.

Sadly, there is zero exploration to speak of and no puzzles to pay much attention to. That in itself is always a big shame, although it is not entirely surprising. The game itself is very linear, which can be a good or a bad thing in the end. For this game, it seems to work semi-decently, but it can feel pretty clunky at times as well  A mixed bag and certainly a missed opportunity by the developers.

As one would expect, Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR also has quite a few action scenes. You even get to shoot guns, which feels rather satisfying. With very detailed and grim levels and great animation, the game sucks you in from the first till the last moment. Even though it is far from perfect, the game is quite enjoyable for one playthrough. With no extras to collect or unlock, replaying the game is not a necessity.
