The child residing in all of us wants nothing more than to see dinosaurs come alive again. Scientifically speaking, that remains still impossible. In the meantime, we have a viable VR alternative in the form of Dino Frontier. It is not exactly like Jurassic Park, but you will want to pay attention to the dinosaurs regardless. The game is available on PlayStation VR, although ports to other platforms may be released in the future.
Any virtual reality game that has dinosaurs in them is a must-play in our book. Dino Frontier is not exactly your average action-packed game,a s it seems to combine some elements from Jurassic Park with Sim City. The objective is to build a settlement in a Western-esque setting while keeping the dinosaurs at bay. You don’t have to worry about any of the logistics associated with managing a multi-million people city either. Everything is done on a smaller scale, which also makes the game a lot more appealing.
Dino Frontier Brings out the kid in Everyone
As one would come to expect from a building simulator, you create structures one at a time. At the same time, you have to contend with citizens and roaming dinosaurs. In virtual reality. It doesn’t get much better than that. Creating new buildings means giving things a good whack of the old hammer, which is quite big in virtual reality. It is quite satisfying to do so as well. Even at an adult age, we still like our toys, thank you very much.
Any game released for the PlayStation VR either requires a DS4 controller or the Move controllers. Dino Frontier relies on the latter, but it does a great job in this regard. It feels as if your hands are doing all of the controlling, rather than creating a frustrating experience. You can even use your virtual hands to expand the world you are building or flick dinosaurs across the map. Not that we like to harm them, but you have to try it at least once.
Do not be mistaken in thinking this game is without challenges. Dino Frontier has you build and construct, but also harvest and fight. Upgrade your cities along the way, as well as the people living there, and you will have an easier time getting along with the natural wildlife. Even when the credits of the game roll across the screen, you won’t put the game away anytime soon. Dino Frontier is delightful in every single way, and some DLC would certainly do it justice.
