First-person shooters will always be quite popular in the world of virtual reality. This is mainly due to fast-paced action and a lot of split-second decisions to make. When Serious Sam: First Encounter was announced for VR, the world was quite excited for obvious reasons.  The game certainly lives up to expectations, although there are still some improvements to be made through future patches.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter is Perfect for VR

Anyone who has ever played any of the Serious Sam games will acknowledge this type of first-person shooter can do quite well in virtual reality. The same can be said for games such as Fallout 4 and Doom, both of which will get their own VR versions in the future. Serious Sam: The First Encounter is an absolute blast to play in VR, and it looks and feels like a completely new game.At the same there, there is the comforting feeling of familiarity at times.

What this game does quite well is mixing both free roaming and action into one compelling VR game. The First Encounter has some stunning visuals, especially when considering the original Serious Sam games date back to 2001. A lot has changed over the past 16 years, and it goes to show in this VR version. Players are transported to ancient Egypt, even though there are plenty of aliens and other science fiction elements involved in the game. Serious Sam is not about the story, though, but rather about killing enemies and blowing things up.

Any virtual reality game will stand or fall based on how the controls respond. Serious Sam: The First Encounter offers full locomotion, which is both a blessing and a curse at the same time. For the people who suffer from simulator sickness, full locomotion is the last thing they need in this game. Escaping motion sickness in this game is nearly impossible, even for people who normally do not suffer from it. That is a downside, but it is not a dealbreaker for us.

No one can deny Serious Sam: The First Encounter is a great virtual reality game. Despite the simulator sickness, the fast-paced action is absolutely amazing. Even though the story doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, we had an absolute blast playing the game. It is definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of the series or looking to give it a try. Do keep in mind people suffering from motion sickness should leave this game alone, otherwise they might regret it.
